hello

IWFS VIRTUAL TASTINGS

As an additional benefit to our members, IWFS Americas works with wine and spirits experts around the world to create exclusive tasting kits and to lead online presentations and tastings. These sessions may focus on a specific producer, a type of beverage, or a specific geographic region. No purchase is necessary, and everyone can participate. These tastings are very educational and entertaining even if the tasting kits are unavailable in your area.  We hope you - and your friends - can join us at an upcoming event. Please check the schedule below, and also enjoy the recordings of past tastings.

  • Saturday, June 28 - "Piedmont: Off the Beaten Track"
  • Sunday, August 10 - "Exploring the World's Most Dangerous Spirit: Absinthe"
  • Tuesday, September 30 - "Rhone White Wines"

OUR NEXT VIRTUAL TASTING

Dear IWFS Member,

The next IWFS Virtual Tasting, "Piedmont: Off the Beaten Path," is on Saturday, June 28, at noon pt/ 3pm et, with UK-based wine expert and author David Way. We are offering a great tasting kit for the event, working with The Wine House in Los Angeles. Here are their notes on the wines:

2023 Diego Conterno Langhe Nascetta - Nascetta is the only indigenous white grape variety from Langhe. In the past, it was mainly used to make sweet wines, usually for religious purposes, but its lovely aromatic complexity makes it ideal for a dry white wine. This Nascetta from Diego Conterno is a selection from two estate vineyards: Ferrione, on a hillside facing west/southwest; and Ginestra, facing east, in Monforte d’Alba. The color is a brilliant bright yellow. The savory and minerally flavors on the palate are accompanied by notes of citrus, pineapple, sage, and rosemary. To be consumed young, but also has excellent cellaring potential. Its longevity allows long aging in the bottle with interesting evolutions in flavor.

2023 La Spinetta Colli Tortonesi Derthona Timorasso - The 2023 Colli Tortonesi Timorasso Derthona shows golden color saturation and opens to neutral stone fruit aromas of quince, pear and peach. This was a warm vintage, and the wine ultimately reveals a slightly waxy texture with canned peach that emerges in a second moment. Made from organically grown grapes.

2022 Braida Limonte Grignolino d`Asti - Grignolino, it is in the name, you cannot help but grin from this wine. Opening with aromas of drying raspberries, strawberries and cranberries that merge with notes of sage, thyme, and dusty earth on the joyful nose. Crunchy red berries pop on the palate, with blood orange and citrus notes adding a zestiness to the palate. The finish brings a savory twist of rosemary and mint, all elevated by vibrant acidity. A wine that also likes a chill.

2022 Ferraris Ruche di Castagnole Monferrato Clasic - Made with Ruché grapes sourced from vineyards with different characteristics, Clasic stands out for its elegance and traditional style that ties it to this winemaking area. The wine’s elegance and complexity is apparent through its luminous ruby color and fascinating olfactory experience. Deep, intense aromas of rose petals intertwine with flavors of cherry jam and forest fruits, followed by spicy notes of pepper to finish. The wine shows vibrant acidity blending perfectly with gentle tones of oak.

2021 Travaglini Gattinara - Deep ruby red in color with garnet reflections. On the nose, aromas of red fruit, blackberry, plum and licorice with hints of vanilla and leather. Full-bodied palate, with intense flavors of cherry, raspberry and spice culminating in a long and smooth finish.  Beautiful freshness and poise to this Gattanara with nutmeg, dried rose petals, saffron and cinnamon. A finely constructed structure follows with velvety, steely tannins and a spiced, chewy finish.

2020 E. Pira + Figli Chiara Boschis "Mosconi" Barolo - From the Mosconi vineyard, located in Monforte d’Alba, known for producing powerful and structured Barolos. Average vine age is 50 years, 370 meters above sea level, in a south-facing exposure. Fermented for 14 days, aged in lightly toasted French oak  (1/3 new, 1/3 second use, 1/3 three+ uses) for 24 months. Red/ruby in color, the 2020 Barolo Mosconi is more red-fruited on the nose, with lifted freshness in its delicate spice of red raspberry, anise, dried roses, and dusty earth. It has a more linear feel, with ripe tannins, a chalky texture, and wonderful, pure notes of apricot on the finish.

The price of these wines, all 750ml bottles, is $275, shipping included. (California orders will be charged sales tax.) To order please click here.  To ensure timely delivery, the deadline for purchasing is Wednesday, June 18
