Message from the President Chris Bonsall

What a year we have had at the IWFS. Wonderful Festivals in Napa, Rioja and Malaysia, the launch of the new Ask André A1-powered pairing tool for perfect wine and food matches, our latest Vintage Card, a new World Chair in the person of John Nicholas from the EA and, most excitingly, the Society's sponsored Susie & Peter's Wine Blast podcast episode Top of the Pops: Classic Fizz Beyond Champagne featuring Essi Avellan MW, author of our latest monograph: Sparking Wines of the World. I highly recommend both this episode and the podcast to all

Visitors to our HQ in London

It was a pleasure to meet briefly with Chicago branch member Matthew Smith while he was visiting London in November. His visit was an ideal time to soak up the festive celebrations of London as the city's famous streets switch on their lights. The In & Out had also joined in with the festive spirit. Do remember that members are invited to stay at The Club at an affiliate rate.

Ask Sid: Château Pichon Baron vertical tasting

Sid recently had the fortune to taste, at a dinner at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, no less than 8 vintages from Château Pichon Baron, second Grand Cru Classé in 1855. This was his second opportunity to taste wines from the estate this year and was an affirmation of their ability to age. This is a great insight for those joining the Americas Paris & Bordeaux festival in May 2026. Click here to get Sid's views on the wines.

With our magnificent festival in Malaysia (see Our Festivals) just closing in November, I also had the opportunity to visit our branches in China. As Chair of the Asia Pacific, it has been my objective for the last five years to travel and visit in person several of the branches within the region. In October I visited Chaoyang District in Beijing to award branch members for their exceptional service to the branch, since its inception in 2012. We've had a fabulous response to our proposed "Judgement of Paris, 50 years on", with branches from 5 countries planning to join possibly the largest international wine tasting ever! From the Sparkling Wines podcast we have achieved 8,000 views on Instagram, a record high for one of our posts, and which has been spreading the word about the IWFS far and wide. Plans are also underway for our 2026 Chef's competition - now in its fifth year.
