June 20, 2017
Theme Master Class: French Local Bistro with Michael Gelinas from Vue Events
Location South Yarra
Date Jun 20, 2017

Hi to all of our IWFS Victoria Members who have attended or shown interest in our previous Cooking Masterclasses.

As announced at our previous events, we are running a cooking masterclassten days from now on Tuesday 20th June.  There is a limit of only 11 places so please be quick to book if you are keen to attend.  The cost for Young Members (under 36) is $90, for Members is $100, and $110 for Guests.

Our previous Confit Duck, Gravlax, Normandy, Dim Sum, Indian, Pasta and Soufflé classes were great fun.  Now we are going to present you with a Local French Bistro theme - a typical French Bistro Menu which presents some of the key dishes that you will find at a French Bistro.

This will be presented by our fabulous Young Member Michael Gelinas.  Michael is Canadian and has worked in some top restaurants in Canada and New York, including 3 Michelin star restaurants.  He is now living in Melbourne and is currently the Head of Events at Vue de Monde.  He has previously presented masterclasses for us on Soufflés and Filled Pasta.  Check out the menu below – it looks great.  Of course we will share supper and complimentary wines with the dishes that have been prepared.

Menu:

  • Oysters Mignonette and Oysters Rockefeller (‘hot versus cold’ oysters to compare and enjoy with Champagne to start)
  • Tarte Flambée (Caramelized onion and bacon tart)
  • Steak frites with béarnaise sauce and a classic, simple salad
  • Crème brûlée

This means you will get to see how to prepare a classic French tarte, how to cook the perfect steak, chips and béarnaise sauce, and the classic French dessert – Crème brûlée.  It will be accompanied by some delicious matching wines.

Where and When:

The class will be held in South Yarra, on Tuesday 20 June with a 7pm start.

Cost:

Cost for Young Members (Under 36) is $90, for Members is $100, and for Guests is $110

Please note:

I look forward to your reply by email with your wish to attend.  Please note that once you email me with your wish to attend, you will only be confirmed if you pay within 48 hours.  So, once you receive my confirmation email, you should pay immediately to:

2017 Weekend Get-Away:  Friday June 30 – Sunday July 2

A mere 60 minutes' drive from Melbourne, this year’s ‘Get-Away Weekend’ takes us on an epicurean adventure to the sensational Bellarine Peninsula.  Here, we’ll combine visits to some of the country’s finest restaurants, wineries, providores and hidden coastal gems which make the Bellarine such an exciting gourmet destination with some very special wines that can only be accessed as a small group.

Highlights include:

  • Optional Thursday evening dinner at Brae (3 hat) or Igni (2 hat), two of Australia’s best restaurants, delivering upscale and contemporary dining at its finest*;
  • Friday evening dinner at Tulip, where chef Graham Jefferies sets the tone for our weekend with a relaxed but contemporary opening night dinner;
  • Saturday morning Bellarine taste trail, with special access to Scotchman’s Hill, farmgate producers and local providores;
  • Saturday lunch, bought to us by chefs Hamish Hames and Scott Marshall of Piknik, who will pair local and seasonal produce with some of the best wines of the region;
  • Saturday night dinner at Gladioli, recognised as one of country Victoria’s finest regional dining experiences. As the highlight of the weekend, celebrated chef Matt Dempsey, will create a culinary experience to perfectly match a range of old world wine treasures;
  • Sunday morning tutored wine tasting followed by a gorgeous winter luncheon at Austin’s, 2016 winner of Gourmet Traveller’s best ‘cellar door experience’.

*For those members interested in extending their weekend, we have made (limited) bookings at each of Brae and Igni. These restaurants were unable to accommodate a group of our size through the main program, but are able to accept smaller groups on Thursday 30 June.

Please see the flyer for more details.
