This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris, a landmark event in the history of wine, where wines from California beat top French wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy in a blind tasting by a French panel. The tasting, organized by Stephen Spurrier in Paris, proved that California wines, and by extension, New World wines, could compete with the best that France had to offer.
To commemorate this event, the IWFS Europe/Africa Zone is spearheading a global initiative to replicate this event. Although there is a prescribed list of wines, the cost of obtaining these wines in the Philippines is prohibitive. As such, we will have the tasting with wines that can be locally sourced. We have taken care to have all the wines at similar prices and with vintages close to each other to make the tasting more meaningful. We are also asked to represent all continents in the tasting instead of just US vs France. This will be a single blind tasting so we can disclose the wines. We will have a rating sheet for this function and the results will be transmitted to the International Secretariat for collation with other ratings from around the world.
