We were pleased to celebrate our Holiday Gala at the exceptionally fine and private Il Ristorante at The Gables Club. Host Marc Lippman and Director Michael Fletcher selected a mouth-watering wine-friendly menu and we choose delightful and interesting pairings including two side-by-sides. The four reception Hors d’ouevres were paired with N.V. Georges Laval Champagne Premier Cru Brut Cumières, 2012 base, and we decided we liked that particular grower Champagne so much we ordered more for the future. We then sat down to enjoy four more courses in gala style, first with mature Bordeaux blanc side by side 2001 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc and 2003 Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion Blanc served with the crab cake creation, and then to Burgendy for 2005 Nicolas Potel Clos St. Denis served with the grilled quail. The roasted crown of veal main course was served with 2005 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande side by side to contrast with 1994 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain. We wrapped it up in a sweet finish with a towering double magnum of 2001 Château Climens and the apple tarte tatin. It was a very festive occasion with many of the members in Black tie and a lovely way to have welcomed in the holiday season together.
