This is the perfect excuse for a casual outing that will be great with friends and as a family-friendly occasion. For our Winter Wine & Food Tasting, the IWFS is going to Puhoi -- just a short 35-minute drive from the CBD. Puhoi is a picturesque little village with a small church, museum and some local shops on the way to the cheese factory’s café.
European traditions run deep in Puhoi since it was settled in 1863 by Bohemians (Czechs). In 1983 a small manufacturing plant was built to convert goats’ milk into ice cream powder and camembert. It wasn’t long before the factory diversified. The Puhoi Valley Cheese Company has expanded to now bring premium cheeses including award-winning camembert, brie, feta, blue and other European products such as ricotta, crème fraiche and mascarpone.
The company employs more than 80 people some of whom are descendants of the original Bohemian settlers. It has a history of European cheesemakers including the most recent artisan cheesemaker Franck Beaurain, a Frenchman, who developed a number of French style cheeses with lots of flavour and texture to rival their French-made equivalents.
The IWFS will taste a flight of wines, followed by a cheese tasting, cheese platters and casual lunch. It is the quintessential wine & food combination for winter. See below for details.

Oyster Bay Sparkling at the start,
then Ransom - Clos Valerie Pinot Gris,
Thornbury Pinot Noir – Central Otago and Mahurangi Merlot.
Cheese Tasting: 10x different cheeses to taste including the cellar selections.
Followed by large cheese platters and lunch
Lunch options are:
- Chef’s Potted Pie
- Puff pastry topped pie, served with french fries, aioli and side salad.
- Soup of the day served with cheesy garlic bread
- Open Beef Sandwich (Topside roasted beef, onion jam, horseradish crème fraiche on lightly toasted ciabatta bread served with french fries and side salad.
Coffee, tea and some award winning ice-cream to finish
