The International Wine & Food Society

London Branch

Who are we?

The IWFS is the world’s oldest and most renowned gastronomic society, with more than 7,500 members and over 140 branches worldwide. It was founded in London in 1933 by André Simon CBE, Legion d’Honneur, who was a dedicated and knowledgeable gourmet and a connoisseur of fine wines.

The London Branch is the original founding branch and the largest in the UK. Our events are held in Central London at easily accessible venues.

Our aims

The Society’s basic aim is the same now as it was when André Simon wrote “The object of the Society is to bring together and serve all who believe that a right understanding of good food and wine is an essential part of personal contentment and health”. This objective has never changed.

 What do we do?

We organise both wine and food tastings every quarter, normally 9 or 10 events. These are notified to the members by way of a printed programme and they then decide which, if any, they wish to attend. Members are also permitted to bring guests to most events. Our website also keeps members posted of events.

What do I get as a member?

  • A quarterly programme of forthcoming London events posted to your home;
  • A glossy quarterly publication, “Food & Wine” containing news and reports from around Europe and Africa;
  • An annual vintage wine guide incorporated into your credit card size membership card;
  • Reduced rate accommodation at the prestigious Navy & Military Club in St. James, London;
  • And many other benefits including discounts at hotels and restaurants world-wide.

What does it cost?

Annual membership of the IWFS currently costs £42 for single membership or £58 for joint membership. Young members (18-36) are at half these rates. Membership lasts January – December and appropriate discounts exist for joining half-way through or later in the year

The London Branch additionally charges £20 per annum (per household) to cover the postage and printing costs of our programme and our web site.

So a husband and wife joining would currently cost £78 per annum (£58 + £20) and a single member would pay £62 (£42 + £20).
