GUY CHARBAUT CHAMPAGNE TASTING SOIREE AT CHABIVIN

Welcome to the Grand Finale! Ex-Comms, Moerige Madame Marilyn, On the Ball Sharon and ye olde cellarmaster, Eugene alias Chookie (the Italian Stallion), are doing their swan song by once again putting old shoulders to the wheel and organising this fabulous function. They are breaking out of the Bastille and will take no prisoners! Join them for a rousing farewell to arms, legs, heads – oui, oui, ze guillotine may yet befall you – on 12 March at Chabivin in Stellenbosch!

And which Champagne house is this, do I hear you ask?  Well, it all started in 1930 in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ when grandfather André planted the first vines on a site recognized today as being one of the most sought after and well suited to the production of quality Champagne grapes. Below 25 metres of chalk, lie tunnels measuring approximately 1,5km in length with constant temperature of 11ºC, which makes for the perfect environment in which up to 3 million bottles of Champagne are matured and stored. His son Guy planted a further 10 hectares during the sixties and today Guy's children, Brigitte and Jean-Pierre, are responsible for the entire 25 hectares now under vine. An additional bonus is the fact that they will both be here at the time of our tasting and Jean-Pierre, with the aid of winemaker Hendrik Snyman, will present the tasting.

The seed to establish Chabivin at the southern tip of Africa was planted in 2007 through a meeting with Hendrik Snyman, the young and passionate South African winemaker. In 2008 Jean-Pierre and Brigitte came for their first visit and fell in love with our beautiful country. With a little bit of imagination and a few flutes of Champagne, they started CHABIVIN, which is managed by Hendrik and he produced his first Cap Classique here in 2010.

Enough of this gay banter. What about the day, you cry? Well, on arrival in the garden you will be welcomed with a glass of their locally produced Cap Classique as well as a refreshing canapé.  Then we’ll move into the tasting room for a tasting of seven champagnes. These are Guy Charbout Brut NV, Rosé Premier Cru NV, Blanc de Blanc Premier Cru NV, Millesime 2000 Premier Cru and Memory 1998 Premier Cru as well as ...... two of the most unobtainable and arguably best Champagnes produced this century. It’s a mystery, a delicious surprise.... to be uncorked on the day!!!
